Fastnacht - carnival in Basel

Fastnacht in Basel is the largest carneval celebrations in the protestand parts of Switzerland. The city erupts into the stillness of early spring with a burst of colour, sound, and tradition unlike anything else in Switzerland. For seventy‑two hours, the city transforms into a living stage where masked cliques, lanterns glowing in the dark, and the unmistakable rhythms of piccolos and drums take over the streets. It’s a celebration rooted in centuries of history, yet vibrantly alive—an immersive blend of artistry, satire, and community spirit that pulls locals and visitors alike into its swirling, nocturnal magic.

These pictures are from the largest carnival celebrations in Fastnacht in protestant Switzerland. I hav experienced it twice and it’s an awesome experience.
