Use a camera bag or backpack for protecting your gear
A good bag or backpack keeps your gear safe, accessible, and organized when you move around. Smaller pouches that can store your camera house, attached lens and probably some spare lens, memory cards and such exists as well. Choose bags based on your style, sling bags for speed, backpacks for comfort, hard cases for maximum protection of your equipment.
There are also hard and soft lens cases that you can attach to your belt or such in case you want to travel light.
