This genre captures movement of athletes, dancers, pets running and kids playing. The challenge is freezing the action at the perfect moment. These styles of photography are about timing, anticipation, and energy. A good action photo feels alive. Because this style includes capturing fast movements it requires something extra from your equipment. You need a fast lens and preferable a camera house that can take many pictures in rapid succession. A fast lens means that the lens needs to have the lowest possible f‑number, which means a large aperture. This allows it to let in as much light as possible, giving you the shortest possible shutter speed. That will “freeze” whatever you’re photographing. Using lowest possible f-number can have some disadvantages, and this is covered in the chapter “02 lenses, memory cards and other accessories”. Depending how far you are from whatever you are taking pictures of you most likely need some kind of zoom lens as well.

If you are new to action photography, you probably will get a fair share of somewhat blurry pictures. This is a way life teaches you to adjust to a proper shutter speed (and f-number). But do not be discouraged, you will learn it if you are curious enough.

People love this style of photography because it is fast-paced and exciting, you learn to react quickly, and every good shot feels like a small victory. Some beginner's tips are to use burst mode to capture multiple frames. Delete the pictures you are not happy with. Follow the subject with your camera (panning) and practice with everyday motion of cars, bikes or pets.

Other photography styles you might explore include:

  • Documentary photography tells real stories about people, places, or events.

  • Astrophotography captures stars, planets, and the night sky.

  • Architectural photography focuses on buildings, shapes, and structures.

  • Food Photography makes meals look delicious and appealing.

  • Event Photography covers weddings, concerts, parties, and gatherings.

Photography is personal. The “best” style is the one that makes you excited to pick up your camera. This is not about having the best camera or knowing every technical term. It’s about curiosity — noticing light, colour, emotion, and moments. By exploring different photography styles, you’ll discover new ways of seeing the world and expressing yourself. Start simple. Try everything. And most importantly, enjoy the process.
